fetor ex ore: A term used to describe noticeably unpleasant odors exhaled while breathing.

fetor hepaticus:A condition seen in portal hypertension that allows mercaptans to pass directly into the lungs, and is a late sign of liver failure. It is characterized by certain bad breath qualities.

fetor oris: Another term used to describe noticeably unpleasant odors exhaled while breathing.

fistula: An unusual attachment between organs or segments that may be caused by disease, surgery or injury.

flatulence: The result of gas buildup in the intestine or the stomach, some of which may be released by belching. Typically passes out the anus.

fundus: The end or bottom of any organ that is opposite to its opening.
 
gas chromatography: Portable machines designed to digitally measure molecular levels of the three major chemicals in a sample of mouth air.

gastric bypass: Also called bariatric surgery, this procedure used to reduce obesity makes a portion of the stomach non-functional.

gastric emptying: Meaning the phase in which the stomach empties into the small intestine at rates that allow for appropriate digestive actions.

gastroenterology: The specialty field dealing with the digestive tract and its associated disorders.

gastrointestinal: Referring to any portion of the digestive tract.

gastroparesis: Meaning delayed gastric emptying, often caused when the stomach fails to respond properly during digestion. Often caused by disease, such as diabetes, and medications.

GERD: Short for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, this condition involves improper closure of the stomach, which allows acids to enter the esophagus and move upward, causing a burning sensation and a breakdown of the esophageal lining.

gingivitis: One in a group of periodontal diseases that causes the gums, or gingiva, to become inflamed.

gum pocket: A result of periodontal disease that allows for bacterial growth in spaces produced when surrounding tissue is destroyed.

H. pylori: Helicobacter pylori is a cause of ulcers, can be tied to cancer and is often spread through contaminated food and poor sanitation.
 
habituation: Non-associative learning in which there is a progressive diminution of behavioral response probability with repetition of a stimulus. This is why it is impossible for a person to tell that they have bad breath.
 

halimeter: A portable sulfide monitor used to test for levels of sulfur emissions in the air of the mouth.

halitophobia: A condition wherein a person believes and fears that he or she has bad breath, even when their breath is not problematic.

halitosis: Known as bad breath, halitosis can be a passing condition or a chronic one and is generally thought to occur from metabolization inside the mouth rather than the stomach.
 
halitosis kits: A specialized product with several items designed to eliminate halitosis.

hemorrhoids: A common occurrence, these are the swollen anal veins that may be temporary or long-standing and may or may not cause bleeding and pain.

hiatal hernia: A protrusion of part of the stomach into the chest cavity through a weakened section of the diaphragm.

histamine: Internally, histamines are hormonal reactors that create adverse reactions to allergens, including runny nose and breathing difficulties.

hyperthyroidism: An over release of hormones from the thyroid gland caused by several diseases and tumors.

IBS: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) occurs in the large intestine and generally causes diarrhea and constipation along with cramping and general discomfort.

inflammatory bowel disease: Inclusive of several disorders, including Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, these conditions affect the colon, generally through swelling and inflammation.

ischemia: A constriction of blood flow in any portion of the body.
