It is characterized by certain bad breath qualities. fetor oris: Another term used to describe noticeably unpleasant odors exhaled while breathing. fistula: An unusual attachment between organs or segments that may be caused by disease, surgery or injury.
flatulence: The result of gas buildup in the intestine or the stomach, some of which may be released by belching. Typically passes out the anus. fundus: The end or bottom of any organ that is opposite to its opening.

Often caused by disease, such as diabetes, and medications. GERD: Short for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, this condition involves improper closure of the stomach, which allows acids to enter the esophagus and move upward, causing a burning sensation and a breakdown of the esophageal lining. gingivitis: One in a group of periodontal diseases that causes the gums, or gingiva, to become inflamed. gum pocket: A result of periodontal disease that allows for bacterial growth in spaces produced when surrounding tissue is destroyed. H. pylori: Helicobacter pylori is a cause of ulcers, can be tied to cancer and is often spread through contaminated food and poor sanitation.
habituation: Non-associative learning in which there is a progressive diminution of behavioral response probability with repetition of a stimulus. This is why it is impossible for a person to tell that they have bad breath.
halimeter: A portable sulfide monitor used to test for levels of sulfur emissions in the air of the mouth. halitophobia: A condition wherein a person believes and fears that he or she has bad breath, even when their breath is not problematic. halitosis: Known as bad breath, halitosis can be a passing condition or a chronic one and is generally thought to occur from metabolization inside the mouth rather than the stomach.
